On April 22 and April 23rd, Captain Softpaws and a close friend of the fleet, Moon Mermaid, and her pirate, Captain Jack, headed east to the great “sea” of Lubbock, Texas to entertain guests of the 39th Annual Lubbock Arts Festival. This year the theme of the festival was fairy tales.
And was the experience magical! Mermaid Laura and Mermaid Calysta with Merfriends out of Arlington, Texas joined us for the two days entertaining guests by swimming in a 40 foot tank, the largest mermaid tank in the world!
Captain Softpaws was the head lifeguard on duty. This was no easy feat making sure that the mermaids were playing safely as there was a lot of water to manage. The tank holds 5000 gallons of water! That is a really large tank. The tank traveled all the way from Colorado to visit our friends in Lubbock Texas.Moon Mermaid and Captain Softpaws, along with Captain Jack Sparrow of Pirates for Hire, entertained the children with story time and, meet and greets. Moon would take pictures with each child as they approached. She would hand each one a special piece of mermaid treasure.
There were also other fairy tale princesses to greet the visitors including Belle and Moana. The festival brought in over 31,000 visitors and almost 200 artisans from all over west Texas. The festival supports visual arts, performance arts as well as children’s art. There were mermaid tails that the children could make as well as jellyfish out of recycled materials. There were dance performances by local children’s dance companies. Authors and painters as well as other fine artisans in pottery and metal works were also in attendance.
This adventure was definitely one for the captains log!
