Since I just took delivery of my newest Captain’s coat, this is going to be about pirate clothing!
As I am Commodore Max of The DREAD Fleet and Captain of DESPAIR, I am obliged to dress accordingly. As I see it, the one article of clothing which differentiates a Captain from their crew is their coat. All the rest is pretty much the same; loose pantaloons, the shoes or boots, loose shirt and belts/scarves/sashes and of course weapons/blades. But a Captain has their coat. Or in my case, coats!
Over the years (1988 to present), I have acquired several. My favorites are the ones which were made without the use of patterns. The latest one was imagined and built by The DREAD Fleet’s tailor, GD Frippery. Although there are wonderful patterns, which do ultimately end up being the basis of fantastic coats, GD Frippery creations are unparalleled!
The process starts with your deciding on the the look of the costume piece you’d like to have made. In my case, I talked it over with GD Frippery, they took my measurements and then came up with a design. I then went to a fabric store and purchased the material in the amounts they needed and the colors I wanted. They then began working their magic! After a time passed, and a few consultations later, I went in for a fitting. I decided on the fine details at that time. After another bit of time passed, the coat was done! Beautiful!
I’m sure that completion time will vary from piece to piece, but I know you will be happy with the results.
Of course, there are other ways to put a costume together. You can always find pants, boots and shirts that will work, at local stores or shops. You can also find very fine and appropriate costumes online. I have done all of these things during my career as a pirate, but I love pieces that are built for me!
